MORE FAQ's

Q:  WILL ANY PROGRAMS OR EVENTS BE HELD IN THE DOG PARK?
A:   We hope to have agility and frisbee demonstrations and classes, K9
Search and Rescue and assistance/therapy pet demonstrations, pet parades, adoption events, holiday pet photography, obedience courses, and even dog wash events there!

Q. HOW CAN I GET MORE INVOLVED?
A. We have 2 CRITICAL needs right now:  SIGNATURES FROM PALMETTO BAY RESIDENTS and ORGANIZATION OF THE DOG PARK'S VOLUNTEERS!!!  To get the signatures, you simply walk around your neighborhood and talk to people, carry a petition in your car, or ask your vet/groomer/petstore, etc. to put up a petition and pick it up regularly, since they keep disappearing!
*OTHER NEEDS:
*Research items needed for the dog park (stats on who uses the items, why they use them, sources for them, etc.)
*Return calls to people interested in volunteering (or with questions)
*Ask your vet and any pet professionals to write letters in support of dog park!
*Attend all council meetings to show support for the dog park
*Be on the telephone committee to get people involved
*Contact corporations to see who will commit to future sponsorship of the park
*Submit articles in favor of the dog park to local papers
If you would like to help with any of these items, please contact our committee at DogParkMiami@aol.com to confirm!

Q:  ARE DOG PARKS LOUD?
A:  No.  Dogs often bark because they can't get what they want. However, dogs in a dog park ARE getting exactly what they want. Dogs playing in open parks tend not to bark as a result.

Q:   DO YOU ACCEPT DONATIONS FOR THE DOG PARK?
A:   Not yet, but thank you for thinking of us.  We will definitely need your help in the future!!  Please email us your information so that we can call on you!

Q:    WILL THERE BE ANYTHING EDUCATIONAL TO READ IN THE PARK?
A:     We hope to have numerous bulletin boards in the park that feature information about such things as dog training how to's, pet sitting services (and what to expect from them), plants and foods that are toxic to animals, telephone numbers for various pet agencies, etc.  (For example, did you know that injestion of chocolate, poinsettias, mistletoe, and holly (separately OR together) is toxic to pets?!)

Q:   WHO FILLS THE HOLE IF A DOG DIGS UP THE GRASS/GROUNDCOVER?
A:   Owners are required (per the list of rules) to fill holes created by their dogs.
We need sponsors to help us make the best dog park ever!

Q:   I STOPPED GOING TO MY LOCAL DOG PARK AFTER MY DOG GOT FLEAS
THERE ON DIFFERENT OCCASIONS.  WILL THERE BE A FLEA PROBLEM AT THE DOG PARK?
A:     We plan to have a regular extermination service for the park (hopefully
as a corporate sponsorship), and we hope to use a different ground cover than
grass (which harbors fleas).  Responsible pet owners regularly bathe their pets,
and the veterinarians in our area promote flea/tick preventatives for South
Florida's dogs.

Q:   ARE PEOPLE JUST GOING TO BRING THEIR DOGS IN AND WALK AWAY
FROM THEM?
A:   You'll see a variety of people in a dog park. Some play interactive games
with the pets (tossing a ball, initiating games of tag, spending quality time with
dogs), some stand aside and watch the pets interact, some sit at tables and
talk to others while they watch their pets play, some bathe or groom their
dogs, and some teach their pets to sit, stay, or to do agility, for example.

Q:   I JUST DON'T BELIEVE THAT DOGS WON'T BE FIGHTING THE WHOLE TIME!!  HOW IS IT POSSIBLE THAT THEY WON'T?
A:   Unless a dog is a known aggressor, all out fights are rare when two dogs
meet on neutral territory!  Dogs are social animals.  They enjoy spending time
with other dogs.
Q:   WHY NOT BUILD A DOG PARK?  THERE ARE LOTS OF PARKS FOR
CHILDREN!
A:    Our society is so used to "Road Rage" and selfishness that
"No-Dogs-In-Park-Rage" is just the next thing of the decade.  Dog parks are
growing increasingly popular, though, and neighboring communities
(Pinecrest, Kendall, etc.) are already planning them for their areas, and they
are looking to us for experise.   Let's share knowledge with them -- not run from the concept in (uneducated) fear!

Q:   AREN'T PARKS ABOUT PEOPLE, NOT PETS?
A:   No...and this is not a DOG issue -- it's a PEOPLE issue.  All residents have a right to utilize park facilities.  Off-leash activity is a valid recreational activity. All Palmetto Bay residents pay taxes to support our park system...everyone pays for public swimming pools, tennis courts, and ballfields that they may never use.

Q:   IT'S ENOUGH FOR PET OWNERS TO SIMPLY WALK THEIR PETS ON
LEASHES AND KEEP THEM IN THE BACK YARD, RIGHT?
A:   Per one vet and animal behaviorist about aerobic exercise for dogs:
“Walking them on a leash is not sufficient exercise. It is not that they die if
they walk on a leash, and it’s not that a human being dies in solitary
confinement either. It is just that it is not optimal for their physiological and
psychological well-being.”
